The Cicatrix series is an ongoing design project between maker and material. Each piece, taking anywhere from 50 to 200 hours to complete, is an act of love for process. In the Cicatrix series, welding goes beyond simply joining separate materials; it becomes the decorative act itself, the form rather than the function. Each cabinet is made by hand-welding rows upon rows of aluminum to a base form made of weak, flexible aluminum sheeting. The weakness of the sheeting gives the cabinet its irregular form, while the welding on top gives it strength and structure.
The knobs on the cabinet as shown are provided by Petra Hardware and designed by
The Perfect Nothing Catalog, the studio of Frank Traynor, who uses a similar welding process on the surface of his pieces.
The drawers are maple but can be customized to any wood species or fully metal.
